French 19th Century Candlestick Tole Bouillotte Lamp

£ 685

A beautiful antique, circa 1820, Regency Period, brass & black/gold painted Tole Bouillotte single candlestick table lamp. The lamp features an adjustable tole lampshade that's  been hand-painted in black with gold trim and finished with a simple round brass finial at the top for your finger to fit through when moving it around. The inside of the shade is white to reflect the light.

Bouillotte is a card game which was popular in France especially during the French Revolution, and was based on three of a kind. A Bouillotte lamp's function was to illuminate the cards of the players. As the candle burned down a key, where the shade connects to the supporting brass shaft, can be released to adjust the height of the shade, to hide the flame and reflect the light downwards.

The majority of these lamps have been converted to electricity to not this one which is in its original condition with its age and wear consistent to its age and use.
