A hand-built studio stoneware dish by British ceramic artist Michael Mason FRSS, c.1980s–1990s.
The gently irregular rectangular form is finished in a softly crackled cream glaze and decorated with bold black abstract motifs, enriched with incised linear detailing. The restrained palette and expressive, almost calligraphic decoration give the piece a distinctly Modern British character.
Mason worked principally in stoneware, combining robust ceramic forms with expressive surface decoration. His practice occupied the territory between functional pottery and sculpture, an approach reflected in his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors.
At approximately 25 cm across, this is a particularly effective display piece: substantial enough to function as a sculptural centrepiece while retaining the intimacy and individuality of studio pottery.
The underside bears Mason’s impressed ‘M’ studio mark.
