Sander’s signature style, as seen in works such as Manitou (1965), is characterized by flat planes of complementary colours traversed by horizontal and vertical lines and constructed by building up opaque layers of paint within each section of the canvas. The resulting effect is calming and contemplative, radiating a cool and muted lyricism.
N.B. Ludwig Sander was an American post-war & contemporary painter and printmaker best known for his austere, highly controlled geometric abstractions incorporating elements of colour field theory. Sander’s works form part of the permanent collections of various high-profile American museums and have been included in numerous exhibitions across the United States, amongst other places.
