A large signed colour lithograph by British artist and illustrator Glynn Boyd Harte, bringing together one of his most characteristic subjects: the exuberant graphic language of European packaging and printed ephemera.
In Sardines II, Boyd Harte assembles an array of vintage French and Portuguese sardine tins, transforming everyday commercial packaging into a richly coloured study of typography, illustration and graphic design. The composition operates simultaneously as still life, graphic archive and affectionate celebration of vernacular design.
A Royal College of Art graduate, Boyd Harte developed a distinctive practice spanning drawing, lithography, illustration, publishing and design. His work is characterised by precise observation, humour, accomplished draughtsmanship and an exceptional sensitivity to colour.
This impression dates from 1986, is signed in pencil and numbered 8/75. It retains its original Francis Kyle Gallery, London label to the verso.
Recently professionally reframed and remounted with conservation backing and acrylic glazing, the unusually generous scale gives the individual packages considerable visual presence.
