Awarded the prestigious Rome Scholarship in Engraving in 1925, Wedgwood studied at the British School at Rome, where the city’s architecture and public spaces became important subjects in his work. Here, soaring umbrella pines frame elegant architecture and animated street life in a composition demonstrating his exceptional command of line, atmosphere and architectural perspective.
This impression has particularly significant provenance. It bears a presentation inscription “To James Laver” — the influential writer, curator and historian who authored The Etchings of Geoffrey Heath Wedgwood. The direct association between artist and recipient gives the work an unusually relevant personal and scholarly context.
The engraving subsequently formed part of the collection of Dennis Sharp (1933–2010), the distinguished British architect, architectural historian, curator and author.
