After Keith Haring (1958-1990): Sesame Street Break-Dancer Animation Cel

Price: £950

Following his untimely death in 1990, the Keith Haring Foundation teamed up with the makers of Sesame Street to create cartoon vignettes of Haring’s iconic street art for the show. These animated segments were broadcast in 1991.

This original animation production celluloid drawing presents a classic Keith Haring childlike figure in a break-dancing pose. Haring took huge inspiration from Disney, and his paintings and drawings radiate motion, as captured so wonderfully in this animation cel.

Although made after his death, this is an incredible and poignant pop culture artefact that celebrates Haring’s unabashed joy and wonderful spirit of openness. It is therefore fitting that his imagery was used on Sesame Street, a programme famous for its inclusivity and kindness.

Medium: Marker on overhead celluloid/rhodoid animation sheet.
Presentation: Mounted and framed under glass.
Size: 43 x 53cm (framed); 28 x 32 cm (unframed image).

This artwork is in generally good condition, with minor handling wear to cel. It’s important to note that animation cels were working materials with irregularities commensurate to studio use and the production process. Further photographs are available upon request. These detailed images form part of the product description.

N.B. Keith Haring was a passionate believer in the public right to art; he worked in a variety of media and formats, always striving to make his work as accessible as possible. From paintings, graffiti and public sculpture to shopping bags, clothing and animation, his unique visual language surrounds us wherever we go.

Interestingly, animation was something Haring “always wanted to do,” he wrote in his journals and there are some who believe that work on the Sesame Street cartoon project may have begun, in some form or another, prior to his death.
