Edward Bawden (1903–1989) — Campions and Columbine, Artist’s Proof Linocut, 1947

A signed Artist’s Proof of Edward Bawden’s Campions and Columbine, a finely observed linocut dating from 1947 and an attractive example of the artist’s distinctive post-war printmaking.

Depicting campion flowers and columbine amongst layered foliage, the composition combines botanical observation with Bawden’s characteristic graphic clarity. Strong blocks of black, repeated linear patterns and angular forms transform the garden subject into an almost architectural arrangement of shape and texture.

One of the defining figures of twentieth-century British graphic art, Bawden studied at the Royal College of Art alongside his friend Eric Ravilious and worked across illustration, printmaking, posters, wallpapers and book design. He also served as an Official War Artist and later became a Royal Academician.

This impression is an Artist’s Proof, signed in pencil by Bawden, and is presented in a restrained black Nielsen aluminium frame with off-white mount.
