Before Alfies, there was Jordan’s. Long before Al Before Alfies, there was Jordan’s.

Long before Alfies Antique Market opened its doors in 1976, this corner of Church Street was home to Jordan’s Department Store.

The story goes back even further: in 1855, Richard Jordan opened a pawnbroker’s on Church Street, which grew over the following decades into the department store known as Jordan’s. By the early 20th century, it had become a familiar local shopping destination, selling clothing, accessories and haberdashery.

These photographs give us a glimpse of Jordan’s in its heyday - including its distinctive corner building and a group of the store’s staff outside.

By the 1970s, however, the department store was struggling as shopping habits changed. The building eventually came up for sale, and in 1976 Bennie Gray bought Jordan’s with a very different idea in mind: to create an indoor antiques market.

What began as a plan to open just the ground floor for one day a week quickly became something much bigger. Within months, Alfies had expanded throughout the building, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Almost 150 years of stories, changing hands from Jordan’s to Alfies - but still the same corner of Church Street.

Cheers to 50 years of Alfies, and many more stories to come.

A beautiful set of four Arts & Crafts style chairs A beautiful set of four Arts & Crafts style chairs, dating to around 1890, recently given a fresh lease of life at Cactus Interiors.

Originally made with rattan seats, the chairs have been newly upholstered in William Morris fabric, bringing together their original character with a fabulous new finish.

They would sit beautifully around an Arts & Crafts dining table, or add an unexpected touch of pattern and history to a more contemporary setting.

Ralph from Cactus Interiors talks us through the set - find them on the first floor of Alfies, alongside a diverse collection of furniture, furnishings and objects d’art.
