Tapio Wirkkala — Pair of Model 3578 Purple Glass Vases, c.1950s

A striking pair of Model 3578 glass vases by Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985), one of the defining figures of twentieth-century Finnish design and Scandinavian modernism.

Compact yet remarkably sculptural, each vase combines a substantial squared form in rich purple glass with polished vertical ribs set against contrasting frosted surfaces. Light passing through the thick glass continually alters the depth of colour and emphasises the strongly architectural construction.

Wirkkala was one of Finland’s most important post-war designers, working across glass, ceramics, wood, metal, jewellery, furniture and industrial and graphic design. His practice moved fluently between art, craft and industrial production, and his work is represented in major international collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The design is identified as Model 3578. Other documented examples carry Wirkkala’s etched signature and model number, and the form has appeared at international auction, including Bonhams and Chiswick Auctions.

These two examples are closely matched in scale, colour and execution. Their combination of rigorous rectangular geometry, deeply articulated vertical forms and polished, frosted and coloured glass makes them particularly effective displayed together.

At approximately 11 cm high, they have the character of miniature abstract sculptures as much as functional vessels — concentrated examples of the material experimentation and disciplined modernism for which Wirkkala became internationally celebrated.
